Your Employees May Need To Be Drug Tested If......

There is a noticeable change in the employees performance in the workplace
There is an increase in the number of call ins and/or sick days
There are noticeable changes in the employees personality, behavior or mood
The DOT Requires Drug Testing When.....
1
An Employee is Injured
The Department of Transportation requires that an employee is drug tested after an injury on the job. This is done to ensure that the employee is not under the influence or impaired while working. The employee will also be drug tested under Direct Observation upon returning to work after an injury or leave of absence. Direct observation must include a same gender observer’s check for prosthetic and other devices that could be used to alter or cheat a drug test.
2
An Employee is Hired
As part of the pre-employment screening and hiring process, The Department of Transportation requires that the applicant be drug tested. The employer may, but is not required to, conduct alcohol testing. After the employer receives confirmation of a negative drug test result, (and a negative alcohol test result if conducted), the employee may begin their job that includes performing safety-sensitive functions. Perspective employees for the Department of Transportation are encouraged to become familiar with the article titled "What Employees Need to Know About DOT Drug & Alcohol Testing. 3
An Employee is Randomly Selected
To maintain a safe and productive work environment, employees are subject to unannounced random drug testing. Under DOT regulations, employers must use a random selection process in which each employee has an equal chance of being selected and tested. Employees can also be drug tested when the employer has reasonable suspicion that the employee is under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
